Length Matters!
Most lawn problems stem from cutting at improper heights or cutting too much off of the leaf in one foul swoop. Taking most of the green and leaving only the bottom pale section of the grass will result in poor photosynthesis and the overall diminishment of the grass, which will then allow weeds to grow in the weak spots and further diminish the quality of your grass. It can spiral out of control very quickly if not properly maintained and regularly mowed.
Our team of professionals at Cairns lawn mowing understand the requirements of each species of lawn available and can give you advice on the best course of action to take to get your lawn to be the envy of the street! |

FAQ
How often should I mow my lawn? There is no black and white answer to how often your lawn needs mowing but the general rule in the industry is that you should never remove more than one third of the length of the blade in one lawn mowing session. If your lawn has become overgrown in the far north Queensland wet season and you need to get it back to beautiful, you need to take off one third of the height and come back next week to take off another third until the desired height is reached and you can get back to a neat, easy lawn maintenance schedule.

How often should I water my lawn?
People often incorrectly plan their lawn watering schedule, watering too often and not for long enough periods of time. Frequent fast watering will result in poor and shallow root growth, the grass becomes adapted to receiving this frequent watering and doesn’t send roots deep to “search” for and store water.
Once you start to water the grass thoroughly and less often, say twice or three times a week for 90 minutes, you encourage the roots to head deeper to search for sub surface moisture and extra root system volume to conserve water during the dry spells. |
Should I poison my edges?Poisoning your lawn edges may seem like an easy alternative to whipper snipping, especially among rocks or other hard to reach places, but Cairns lawn mowing does not recommend poisoning the edges if it is at all possible. As the grass dies off, it allows weeds to grow in its place. In addition to this, the use of unnecessary chemicals is bad for the environment.
|
How often should I fertilise?Again, there is not one specific answer that will suit all lawns and times of the year. Cairns lawns are slightly different again, in that we don’t get 4 defined seasons of summer, autumn, winter and spring. We would be happy to assess your lawn, its condition, soil condition, water requirements and shade/ sunlight needs, to come up with a fertiliser schedule unique to your lawn and its requirements.

Does my lawn need to be aerated? If you have lawn that is growing poorly due to heavy foot or vehicle traffic that has resulted in compacted soil, or if you have a lawn that was grown in less than ideal soil to begin with. You may need your lawn to be aerated. We can assist with this diagnosis and aeration if you suspect that you require it

What is the best way to get rid of weeds?Depending on the type of weeds you have a few options.
Pulling them out is the most foolproof way and safest for your lawn and the environment, unfortunately it is usually hard work. Pulling them out also creates lawn aeration which is a beneficial part of lawn care. If you have broadleaf weeds growing in your grass, you can use a product designed to kill broadleaf weeds but not your lawn. Be careful as some of these will kill buffalo lawns, you need to select a product suitable for buffalo if this is the lawn that you have, its is the most common Cairns lawn. Boiling water is also suitable and will kill most weeds with very little effort and will not kill your lawn if you are careful not to spill it every where. |
